Will you marry me?

Jan Etherington

If you don't want to be jostling for position with hundreds of other romantic couples, go off season and pop the question after dark when the city is at its most magical. April and May are good months - silky light and not too busy - but this is a city that is romantic even on a freezing, fog-shrouded January night.

Almost anywhere will do save a gondola (expensive and cheesy), the Rialto (too public) or Piazza San Marco (big, busy and a little bleak). Venice has any number of tiny, hidden corners just made for romance - a small calle (alley) with the sound of water lapping gently on ancient stones would be my choice: reconnoitre the Dorsoduro and San Polo districts for likely spots.

To stay: The most romantic of the five-star hotels is the 90-room Gritti Palace. Even more romantic, rent an apartment: Venetian Apartments has a tremendous selection of properties: how about the Certosa apartment, which has a water-gate entrance from the canal straight into the bedroom, or the Affresco apartment with silk-covered walls, frescoed ceilings, Murano-glass chandeliers and a canal view?
