That great marble church and the canal were our stupendous vista for a week, thanks to our renting an apartment in a 15th-century palace known colloquially as Ca' Desdemona. I don't suppose I shall ever again live with such a magnificent outlook. I found myself getting up in the small hours to admire the view by moonlight, and again early in the morning to see the still surface of the canal reflect the first streaks of dawn before water-traffic lashed it into movement... |

Grand Canal Giglio (reference v129 in Venetian Apartments' brochure) sleeps four and includes daily maid service and private water-taxi transfers from Venice's Marco Polo airport. The property lies just a few minutes' walk from both Piazza San Marco and the Rialto. Apartments start at around £475 per week for a simple studio, notably the Salute Blu (v100), a two-person flat with a small private courtyard on Dorsoduro near the Salute church and Accademia gallery. If you are travelling as a family, the Santa Croce Giardino (v139) in the Santa Croce district, five minutes' walk from the Rialto, sleeps four in two rooms; it also has a small walled garden - a rarity in Venice. Properties on the Grand Canal range from £3,000 to £8,500 for the San Rocco and £12,500 for the entire piano nobile (main floor) at top-of-the-range Palazzo Santa Giustina (also available for parties and receptions). The Palazzo Santa Giustina also has a range of smaller apartments that can be taken for three days rather than the usual weekly rental period. |
