Freedom comes in a flat package

Last winter, spotting a particularly cheap air fare to Venice, we decided to book a weekend break with our two young children. The only problem was accommodation. Hotels looked expensive - especially since we wanted two bedrooms, or one very large one. So we booked three nights in an apartment instead.

It worked brilliantly. We were tucked away off a tiny courtyard halfway between the Rialto and the Piazza San Marco. It was a fairly simple apartment: a large sitting room with sofa bed and kitchen area, plus a separate bedroom. When the children got bored with canals and museums, we could take them back to the flat and chill out without feeling cooped up. By cooking the evening meal in the flat we could also cut catering costs and get the children to bed at a reasonable time...

A new option for 2004 is a raised ground floor apartment [Guggenheim Grand Canal, v231] next to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum on the Grand Canal. It costs £1325 a week in summer and sleeps two to three people. Rates are normally for one week, but some apartments are available for shorter periods...
