Some people go there and complain instantly that the canals stink, that it's horribly crowded with tourists, expensive and irreparably sinking to boot. Other are immediately enchanted by the seductive charms of the city and dream of owning an apartment there. It doesn't need to be a dream any more. Unless you aim to take over one of the opulent baroque palaces on the Grand Canal, prices are actually affordable. The population is surprisingly small, at just over 65,000, and there is a strong sense of international community, especially from Britain, America and France.
