Our little place on the canal

Misty, moody and magical - Venice is at its best. So go now and, yes, rent a flat says Christopher Hudson

...The motor launch leaves about every hour and takes an hour and it deposited us at the Arsenale vaporetto stop, a couple of hundred yards through the narrow lanes from our house. The agent was waiting to give us the keys and take us up two flights of stairs to a pretty, top floor apartment with its second double bedroom on a wooden deck projecting out from under the eaves...

...At nearly £800 a week it was less expensive than a two-star hotel I looked at in a back street - shabby, poky and musty with cooking smells from the pizzeria next door. And for travellers on a budget, eating out twice a day can prove very expensive... while other tourists were looking disconsolately at bog-standard restaurant menus, the three of us could cook up as good or better meals in the apartment for a fraction of that price...

Christopher Hudson stayed at Campo Arsenale, Flat V (v74). You can read the whole article in the Daily Mail, Saturday January 17, 2004.
