...I should mention that our Venetian experience was made infinitely easier by the fact that we hired a flat for a week through the holiday-rental company Venetian Apartments. At €1,400, this wasn't cheap but it was incredibly useful as a base to which to return to make lunch after a morning's exploring. We could also cook dinner for friends who happened to be in town. Our very pretty, newly refurbished apartment additionally had a garden, a rarity in Venice and a wonderful luxury...
